LED Pixel Pitch Explained: How to Choose the Right One

When you start looking for an LED display, you will probably come across numbers like P1.5, P1.9, P2.5, P3.91, P5 and more.

At first, they may look like just different product models. But these numbers actually tell you something important about the screen: pixel pitch.

If you're choosing an LED display for the first time, it is easy to think that a smaller number must mean a better product. After all, P2.5 sounds better than P3.91, and P1.5 sounds even better.

But when we talk with customers about real projects, we don't look at it quite that way.

Sometimes P1.5 is the right choice. Sometimes P2.5 makes more sense. And sometimes choosing P3.91 or P5 can actually be the smarter decision.

Here's why.

What Is Pixel Pitch?

Pixel pitch is the distance between the centers of two adjacent pixels on an LED display, measured in millimeters.

For example, a P2.5 LED display has a pixel pitch of 2.5 mm, while a P5 LED display has a pixel pitch of 5 mm.

The smaller the pixel pitch, the closer the pixels are to each other. This means the display has a higher pixel density and can generally provide more detail, especially when viewed from a shorter distance.

This is why finer pixel pitches are often used for indoor applications where people may stand relatively close to the screen.

But that doesn't mean you should always choose the smallest pixel pitch available.

Pixel Pitch and Viewing Distance

One of the first things we look at when discussing an LED project is viewing distance.

Imagine an LED wall in a conference room. People may be sitting only two or three meters away, looking at presentations, text and detailed images.

In this situation, a P1.5 or P2.5 LED display may be a sensible choice because the audience is relatively close.

Now imagine a large outdoor advertising screen installed on a building. Most people may see it from 20, 30 or even 50 meters away.

In that case, choosing an extremely fine pixel pitch may not provide enough visible improvement to justify the additional investment.

This is why we always recommend considering where the audience will actually be standing before choosing an LED screen pixel pitch.

The right question isn't simply:

“Which pixel pitch is smaller?”

It is:

“Which pixel pitch will give my audience the viewing experience they need?”

P1.5, P2.5, P3.91 or P5?

Different pixel pitches naturally fit different applications.

A P1.5 LED display can be a good option for premium indoor applications where people are close to the screen and image detail is important. Think of conference rooms, control rooms or high-end commercial spaces.

A P2.5 LED display is a popular choice for many indoor applications. It can work well in retail stores, meeting rooms, commercial spaces and event venues where a balance between image quality and investment is important.

A P3.91 LED display is widely used for stages, concerts, events and rental applications. When the audience is several meters away, P3.91 can provide a very good viewing experience without necessarily requiring the higher investment of a finer pixel pitch.

For outdoor advertising and larger commercial displays, P5 LED displays and larger pixel pitches such as P6.67 or P8 may be more practical, depending on the screen size and viewing distance.

These are examples, not rules.

The same pixel pitch can work very well for one project and be completely unsuitable for another.

Why We Don't Recommend Choosing Pixel Pitch Alone

When a customer asks us, “Which pixel pitch is better?”, our first answer is usually not a product model.

We want to know a little more.

Where will the screen be installed?

How far away will people be?

What will they see on the screen?

How large will the screen be?

Is it a rental screen or a fixed installation?

And, of course, what is the project budget?

These questions may seem simple, but they can completely change the recommendation.

For example, imagine you are preparing a rental LED screen for concerts and events and are comparing P2.5 with P3.91.

If the audience will normally be several meters away and P3.91 already provides the visual quality required for the event, moving to P2.5 simply because the pixel pitch is smaller may not create enough additional value.

The difference in budget could instead be used for other parts of the project—better flight cases, spare parts, a suitable control system, installation equipment, or simply keeping the project within budget.

That's an important part of choosing an LED display:

You don't want to spend more just because you can. You want to spend where it actually makes a difference.

What About Screen Size?

Screen size is another factor that shouldn't be overlooked.

A large LED display with a fine pixel pitch can contain a very high number of pixels. This can be excellent when detailed content needs to be viewed from close range, but it can also increase the overall project cost and requirements for processing and power.

For a large outdoor screen viewed from a long distance, a larger pixel pitch may already provide the visual quality the audience needs.

On the other hand, for a relatively small indoor screen that people will view from only a few meters away, a finer pixel pitch can be much more important.

So pixel pitch should always be considered together with the screen size and viewing distance, rather than treated as an isolated specification.

Is Smaller Pixel Pitch Always Better?

This is probably the most common misunderstanding we see when customers compare LED displays.

A smaller pixel pitch can provide a higher pixel density and better detail at a shorter viewing distance. But it also usually means a higher investment.

Imagine spending extra money to upgrade from P3.91 to P2.5 for an event screen, only to discover that most of the audience is standing far enough away that the difference is barely noticeable.

Would that be the best use of the budget?

Maybe not.

That doesn't mean P2.5 isn't better technology for certain applications. It simply means that better specifications don't always mean a better project.

The same applies in the opposite direction.

If people will be sitting close to the screen in a meeting room, choosing a larger pixel pitch simply because it is cheaper may save money at the beginning but fail to provide the viewing experience you actually wanted.

The goal is to find the right balance.

The Right Pixel Pitch Is the One That Fits Your Project

After working with LED display projects for years, we've learned that customers don't always need the smallest pixel pitch or the most expensive solution.

Sometimes the right answer is P1.5.

Sometimes it is P2.5.

Sometimes P3.91 or P5 is exactly what the project needs.

What matters is understanding the actual application first.

So before choosing an LED display, think about the viewing distance, screen size, content, installation environment and budget.

And don't be afraid to choose a larger pixel pitch when it is the right fit. A specification only has value when it creates value for the actual project.

The smallest pixel pitch is not always the best. The best solution is the one that suits you best.
