GOB vs COB: Which One Should You Choose?

We get this question quite often:

“Should I choose GOB or COB?”

Honestly, there isn't one answer that works for every project.

Both are good LED display technologies, and both offer excellent protection for the LED surface. But after working with LED displays for many years, we think there are a few practical things worth knowing before making the decision.

GOB vs COB: What Is the Difference?

In simple terms, GOB (Glue on Board) adds a protective layer over traditional SMD LEDs, while COB (Chip on Board) mounts LED chips directly onto the PCB and encapsulates them.

Both technologies can make the LED surface much more resistant to physical contact, dust and other damage.

The more important difference, however, often appears when you actually install and maintain the screen.

Why GOB Can Be a Practical Choice

For rental and event applications, we find GOB to be a very practical option.

Rental screens are moved, assembled and dismantled frequently. Cabinets may be transported between different venues and handled many times. The additional protection provided by GOB can be very useful in these situations.

At the same time, GOB keeps the familiar SMD-based module structure, which can make module replacement and maintenance relatively straightforward.

That is one reason we often recommend GOB for rental, events and other applications where the screen is frequently handled.

GOB is also suitable for many fixed installations where additional protection is important.

Where COB Makes Sense

We don't think COB is a technology that should simply be avoided.

For fine-pitch, close-viewing and high-end fixed installations, COB can be an excellent choice. Its highly integrated LED surface provides very good protection and works particularly well when the display remains in one location for a long time.

But there is one practical detail about COB that we think every customer should know before installation.

One Practical Thing to Know About COB: Installation Sequence

COB LED displays are calibrated before leaving the factory, so the installation sequence provided by the supplier should be followed carefully.

In other words, don't simply treat the cabinets as interchangeable and install them in whatever order is most convenient on site.

We have seen situations where cabinets were rearranged during installation. The display itself was working normally, but differences in brightness or color became visible after the original sequence was changed.

This can be especially noticeable on fine-pitch COB displays viewed from a short distance.

So when your COB display arrives, keep the installation marks and follow the supplier's sequence. If a module or cabinet needs to be replaced later, follow the supplier's recommended replacement procedure as well.

It may sound like a small detail, but it can save a lot of unnecessary troubleshooting later.

What About Maintenance?

Both technologies have their own considerations.

GOB provides excellent surface protection, but repairing an individual damaged LED can be more difficult than with a conventional SMD module because of the protective coating.

COB has a highly integrated structure, so maintenance and replacement can also require more specialized procedures. Calibration needs to be taken into account when components are replaced.

So we wouldn't say that one technology is simply “better” than the other.

So, GOB or COB?

If your LED display will be used for rental, events or frequent transportation, GOB can be a very practical choice.

If you're working on a fine-pitch, close-viewing, fixed-installation project, COB may be worth considering.

And if you're choosing COB simply because it sounds like the more advanced technology, we'd suggest looking at the actual project requirements first.

The newest technology isn't always the best technology for every project.

The right choice is the one that fits how you are actually going to use and maintain your LED display.
